I was prowling through one of my favourite 2nd hand bookshops and found a copy of Max Lakes ‘Hunter Wine’. Max Lake started Lakes Folly (the first boutique winery in Australia) in the Hunter Valley north of Sydney and is one of the original doctor winemakers. That is he was a surgeon during the week and winemaker/grower on the weekends.
But my find was better than just the book. It was autographed by the author and had several hand written notes inside. I’ve got a pretty extensive wine book library so to get an original with the authors own notes, mate, that made my day.
The most interesting one is shown below. And the best line to me is near the end; ‘but the vineyard is a voracious feeder on capital’.
I guess some things just have not changed over the years.
And this is the newspaper article about the book.
