We had our posts in and the wires were up. The irrigation was still to go in but otherwise we were set to go.
We killed off the grass with a weed spray to get rid of weed competition for the new plantings. A few weeds will suck an incredible lot of water and nutrients from the soil. We found that keeping the weeds away from the young vines saved us a year in setup times. Yes, it was that much.
We found it easier to sow a permanent cover grass before the posts and wire went in. Other vineyards sowed down the alleyway only and some places just kept whatever pastures were in place. We found it quicker and easier to sow everything and then weed spray the undervine row.
