The banning of cheap, low quality wine in the notorious foil-bags (papsak) by the Minister of Agriculture, has been welcomed by the wine industry. According to Dr Johan van Rooyen, chief executive of the South Africa Wine Industry Council, the industry initiated this ban as far back as 2004 and welcomes the gazetting of the ban on wine in these substandard containers.
“The ban will also reaffirm the local industry commitment to combating alcohol abuse, something we have not been receiving the recognition we deserve,” he says.
Van Rooyen says that the South Africa Wine Council, which represents all components of the local wine industry including labour, emerging agriculture, civil society, producers, distribution and marketing, had decided to ask for the banning of these wine containers after inclusive consultations with a wide range of representative bodies. “The South Africa Wine Council not only had the support of the industry in this objective, but also that of local and national government who are aware of the situation with regards to the role these containers play in alcohol abuse and social breakdown,” he says.
